City Announces New Precautionary Measures to Ensure Safety of Residents and Peaceful Protests

On Sunday, May 30, the City of Chicago announced new precautionary measures to further ensure the health and safety of residents and the hundreds of peaceful protesters participating in rallies this Sunday. As part of these efforts, the City announced that multiple routes to the Central Business District will be temporarily reduced today following multiple public safety incidents and property damage that occurred overnight.

Public Transportation

Additionally, CTA service has also been suspended for trains and buses coming in and out of the Loop for public safety reasons. CTA will provide regular service updates at transitchicago.com.

Mayor Lightfoot is shutting down the CTA at 6:30 pm tonight until some time tomorrow.

Businesses Recommended to Not Open Tomorrow

The Mayor also recommends that businesses do not open tomorrow.

Protests

The City is not aware of any planned demonstrations tomorrow, although they often happen spontaneously.

National Guard

Mayor Lightfoot has requested and will receive the assistance of the Illinois National Guard who will maintain a limited presence to support the police department.

Curfew: 9pm - 6am

CURFEW IN EFFECT: Until further notice, a curfew between the hours of 9PM and 6AM is now in effect in the City of Chicago. Please stay safe.

Limited Access to the Loop:

Access only to residents and essential employees. Entry point to the loop have been designated below. Identification showing your business or address of residency will be requested. Boarding companies will be allowed to enter.Proper Identification to get past all check points are requested per CPD.

  • Division St. from Lake Shore Drive to N. Halsted St.
  • N. Halsted from Division St. to Milwaukee Ave. and Grand Ave.
  • Milwaukee Ave. from Grand Ave. to Kinzie St.
  • Canal St. from Kinzie St. to 26th St.
  • 26th St. from Canal St. to Lake Shore Drive.

Access Points:

  • Lasalle from the North
  • Chicago Ave from the West
  • State St from the South

Emergency Operation Center:

The Emergency Operation Center is now activated.

This City is requesting that any buildings with outside furniture or other elements that are not secured be removed and that any dumpsters be secured to they cannot be moved. The City will be working with waste haulers and scavengers between 4:00 am 8:00 am to clear waste and grease traps so buildings should make engineers aware that there may be increased or changes to such services.

The City is also advising all buildings to proactively board up properties if possible as a precaution. The City has sent a team of building inspectors around the central business district to take stock of needs and have hired companies to conduct emergency board ups.

The status for a planned protest to take place downtown at 1:00 pm is unknown at this time. Updates will be provided as necessary. Continue to monitor news media and other sources for rapid developments.

Phase 3

As of right now, no decision has been made as to whether the City will proceed with the re-entry to Phase 3 on Wednesday.
