Council Committee Approves Fair Work Week Ordinance

July 24, 2019

After obtaining approval from the Chicago City Council Committee on Work Force Development a day earlier, the full City Council passed a substitute version of the Chicago Fair Work Week Ordinance on July 24.

Prior to the vote, BOMA/Chicago had maintained its position that language requiring a waiver to be included in collective bargaining contracts in order to be exempt from the ordinance contravenes, violates and is preempted by the national labor policy enunciated in and by the National Labor Relations Act, 29 U.S.C. §151, et seq, and the National Labor Relations Board.

Since its inception in 1902, BOMA/Chicago has served as the collective bargaining agent for our members with local labor unions. Today BOMA/Chicago negotiates collective bargaining agreements for janitorial and security workers with SEIU Local 1 and for building engineers with IUOE Local 399.
