City Advances 2024 Construction Code Updates

Published by BOMA/Chicago on July 30, 2026

The Department of Buildings (DOB) introduced an ordinance updating Chicago’s Construction Codes to align with the 2024 Model Codes. As part of this process, DOB provided a detailed briefing to BOMA/Chicago’s Codes Committee and incorporated important flexibility in the Energy Code based on our members’ feedback. In particular, DOB acknowledged the need for clearer guidance on smaller buildouts and committed to working with BOMA/Chicago to further refine these requirements.

The ordinance advanced quickly through City Council, appearing before the Zoning Committee on June 16 and receiving final approval at the June 17 City Council meeting. BOMA/Chicago submitted public comments to the Zoning Committee in support of the ordinance.

With the updated codes now adopted, BOMA/Chicago is partnering with the Illinois Green Alliance to deliver an educational webinar for members to walk through the major changes, highlight areas where BOMA/Chicago secured improvements, and help building teams prepare for implementation.
