Building Collaboration to Reduce Bird Collisions

BOMA/Chicago recently partnered with Alderwoman Maria Hadden (49th Ward), several bird advocacy organizations, and Studio Gang to support the development of a new Bird-Friendly Toolkit that outlines practical steps for homeowners and building owners to reduce migratory bird collisions.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to addressing collisions across Chicago’s neighborhoods. Because most incidents occur on lower floors, reaching homeowners and smaller building owners – who may not always have access to technical guidance – is especially important. The toolkit provides clear, adaptable strategies for a wide range of property types. 

BOMA/Chicago also brings longstanding leadership through the Lights Out Chicago program, which encourages commercial buildings to dim or turn off nonessential lighting during spring and fall migration. This voluntary effort has helped reduce collisions for the millions of birds traveling through Chicago’s lakefront flyway. 

BOMA/Chicago appreciated the opportunity to work with Alderwoman Hadden and bird advocacy partners to raise awareness of practical, voluntary ways to reduce collisions.
