BOMA/Chicago Works with City to Streamline Debt Checks Process

As part of the City of Chicago’s Cut the Tape Task Force, BOMA/Chicago is addressing inefficiencies in the City’s Debt Check process. This process searches for existing debts of tenants and building owners before permits or licenses are issued.

Led by Jan Goldsmith (Zeller), a group of BOMA/Chicago’s Codes Committee members is proposing solutions to improve the system. Recommendations include consolidating department permit and billing information, creating a building portal with enhanced search options, adding online payment features, and streamlining debt check policies and procedures to ensure accurate and consistent data and findings.

These efforts aim to make the process more efficient and accessible while supporting Chicago’s building community and the city’s economic growth.

Members are encouraged to share feedback about the debt check process with Amy Masters at amasters@bomachicago.org, who represents BOMA/Chicago on the City’s Cut the Tape Task Force.
