High-Rise Lighting Ordinance

May 9, 2021

A few weeks ago, BOMA/Chicago distributed a building member survey related to an ordinance being considered by the City Council that would require high-rise illuminated signs to be extinguished between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

As a follow up to the survey, here is some additional information about the proposed ordinance:

  • The ordinance applies only to high-rise signs that are 150 feet above grade. It does not apply to street level signs or non-signage exterior building lighting, or any illuminated sign that is less than 150 feet above grade, regardless of the height of the building.
  • Aldermanic approval of most new projects in the Central Business District has stipulated lighting restrictions similar to the hours that will be contained in the ordinance.
  • The ordinance applies only to high rise signs in the Central Business District.

BOMA/Chicago will continue to monitor this proposal. Please contact Ron Tabaczynski with any further questions about the proposed ordinance at rtabaczynski@bomachicago.org.
