BOMA/Chicago Working with CFD to Launch Revised Fire Safety Director Program

August 26, 2015

The City of Chicago’s revised Fire Safety Director Program is expected to be rolled out in early fall.

After BOMA/Chicago advocated for much needed revisions to the Chicago Fire Safety Director Program, the city made several changes. The program will no longer be administered through City Colleges and will not require college credit. The revised program will consist of three consecutive four-hour days as opposed to the current eight eight-hour days spread over eight weeks. The three days will be used for training and the overall exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, an individual will be issued a provisional certificate and will have 30 days to be certified at his or her building. This will consist of an onsite test to demonstrate familiarity with the particular building.

In September, BOMA/Chicago will open a pre-registration page on the BOMA/Chicago website to enable members to pre-register for courses. Course dates will then be determined and scheduled by CFD depending on the demand. Once a course date is scheduled, pre-registered individuals will then be directed how to enroll and pay the course fee directly through CFD.  No registration is available yet from CFD. Classes will generally be held at the Chicago Fire Academy, but CFD has agreed to provide the course at other locations and may even consider evening sessionsWhere possible, BOMA/Chicago staff will work with individual firms and CFD to schedule on-site classes.

Members with questions about renewing existing certifications, or obtaining a one-year interim certification by passing an exam prior to completing the course, can click here for more information.
